Girls winners Covert, Wolfgram run record times By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Emily Covert and Tierney Wolfgram put on a show Saturday at the Minnesota state cross country championships by turning in record-breaking performances. Covert, of Minneapolis Washburn, broke Bethany Hasz's state meet course record when she ran 17:30.1 to win the Class AA meet by 4.7 seconds over Farmington freshman Anna Fenske. Wolfgram of Math & Science Academy ran 17:31.6 in order to beat seventh-grader Lauren Ping and ninth-grader Grace Ping of Cotter in the Class A race by more than 48 seconds. Wolfgram's time was a record for Class A. Despite the Pings' best efforts, Perham edged Cotter for the team title 86-87. In the AA race, Wayzata won the team title with 51 points. Lake Conference rival Edina was second with 72. Khalid Hussein led the Wayzata boys to their 10th state championship in 25 years. Hussein ran 15:22.6 in one of his best races of the season. The Trojans put six runners in the top 25 placers and scored 37 points. Stillwater Area was second with 79 points. Acer Iverson of Roseville was second in 15:31.8. Senior Matt Steiger of La Crescent edged out Declan Dahlberg of Mounds Park Academy as both were timed in 15:44.8. The Perham boys completed the small-school sweep.
