Seniors Teegan Anderson, Grace Mignone, Abbey Nechanicky and Grace Weber of Wayzata High in Minnesota, members of the Class 3A state championship team Nov. 5 at the MSHSL final at St. Olaf College in Northfield, join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on winning the program's first girls title since 2017 and the fifth in program history, in addition to looking ahead to competing Nov. 13 at NXR Heartland at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, S.D. Wayzata is seeking its sixth appearance at Nike Cross Nationals, including its first since winning the regional crown in 2018. Nechanicky explains how meaningful it is to become the first Wayzata female athlete to capture an individual state title in 16:47.61, eclipsing the 2018 all-time course mark of 17:03.4 achieved by Emily Covert of Minneapolis Washburn. Mignone highlights how impressive the team has been in the second half of races throughout the season, especially Sept. 23 at the Roy Griak Invitational when Wayzata rallied in the final mile to secure a one-point victory against Cherry Creek High from Colorado. Weber examines how the rest of the Wayzata roster improved last year when Nechanicky was injured and sidelined for the season, and how that has benefited the entire lineup with her return this fall. Anderson analyzes how instrumental coach Addy Hallen has been in her leadership and support, and how significant it was to culminate a five-year journey by capturing the state championship with a 39-89 victory against Minnetonka. Weber shares how beneficial it was to race against Olathe West from Kansas and other athletes and programs from outside Minnesota at Roy Griak in preparation for NXR Heartland. Nechanicky highlights the improvement of eighth-grader Aubrey Smith, freshman Maddie Gullickson and sophomore Alyson Kleyman, and how valuable their contributions have been in the overall team success. Anderson expresses gratitude for the support of their fellow teammates, families and community throughout the season. Mignone speaks about the motivation to not only win NXR Heartland, but to perform well Dec. 3 at Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon. And the four student-athletes share how they reached their respective college choices, with Mignone and Weber to remain teammates at Minnesota, Anderson deciding on Tennessee and Nechanicky selecting Colorado, making them the deepest girls senior class in the country.
