Edina girls, Hopkins boys step to front

In a year where Minnesota girls cross country made a big impact on the national radar, the state championship meet at St. Olaf put everybody together to finally answer the big questions.

Yes, the Hasz sisters (of Alexandria) are both healthy. Bethany won her second Class AA championship in 17:32.2 and set a new standard as the state moved to 5,000 meters for the first time to match the boys. Bethany also won the race in 2013. The defending champion, Megan Hasz, has played some catch up after an injury disrupted her track season and part of the summer. Megan, fifth at NXN last year, ran 17:38.9 to place second.

Edina moved to the fore as the top team in the state and proved it by scoring 68 points to win the championship. Marshall was second with 76. Willmar, an NXN team last year that returned most everybody, was third with 119. Wayzata, which won NXN in 2013, was fourth.

Behind freshman Maria Rickman, Edina’s strength came from its 2-3-4 runners all finishing in the top 18 (and 18:32.7 or better). Edina didn’t use a single senior in its top seven. Marshall only has one senior. Willmar has none.

In the boys race, Wayzata’s Jaret Carpenter succeeded former teammate Connor Olson as the state champion and ran 15:26.5. Senior Micah Mather of St. Paul Highland Park was second in 15:28.2 and senior Eli Krahn – making a nice comeback this year after some injuries – was third in 15:32.3.

Hopkins ran tremendously and scored 34 points to win its first state championship in 13 years. With three in the top 12 – Seth Eliason, Owen Hoeft and Jake Henschel – Hopkins was unmatched up front. Minneapolis Washburn scored 67 points for second place and Krahn’s Stillwater team was third with 87.

Seventh grader Grace Ping from Cotter, the wunderkind of this year’s high school cross country season, ran 17:52 to win by 50 seconds in the Class A girls final. Clearly, she did not have to open up the throttle.

The 12-year-old sensation, who beat Illinois state champ Judy Pendergast at the Roy Griak Invitational, is entered in the NXN Heartland championships, where she will take on the Hasz twins and a rested Stephanie Jenks from Linn-Mar IA.

With so many individual qualifiers in the Class A race, the team placers are spread out. Perham won the team championship with 74 points. Fifth runner Ashley Hokanson scored 26 team points but was 72nd in the race.

Mora won the boys Class A title with 43 points.

Zack Emery from La Crescent ran 16:07.8 to win the race. Mora’s Michael Schwinghamer was second, in 16:11.1.
